Richard A. Helms,
Pharm.D. is currently professor of Pharmacy and Pediatrics. He
practices in the area of pediatric nutritional/ metabolic
support at Le Bonheur Children's Medical Center, part of
Methodist Healthcare. He also serves as Chair of the Department
of Pharmacy, Director of Clinical Pharmacy at Le Bonheur, and
Administrative Director of the Center for Pediatric
Pharmacokinetics and Therapeutics.
He received a B.S. in Biological Sciences from The Ohio State
University in 1971, a B.S. in Pharmacy from the Massachusetts
College of Pharmacy in 1976, and a Pharm.D. from Duquesne
University in 1979. Dr. Helms completed an ASHP-accredited
residency in Hospital Pharmacy at Mercy Hospital, Pittsburgh,
PA. Dr. Helms is Board Certified in Nutrition Support Pharmacy
Practice.
Dr. Helms' major research interests include amino acid and fatty
acid metabolism in the neonate and infant. He is currently
conducting research on cysteine dosing in the pre-term neonate,
carnitine effects on neonatal morbidities, and amino acid
requirements in home parenteral nutrition patients.
Dr. Helms teaches in Pharmacy Biochemistry, Introduction to
Pharmacy, Special Projects in Clinical Pharmacy, Therapeutics
III, Pediatrics Selective, and the Pediatric Nutrition rotation.
Dr. Helms has served on the Board of Directors for the Pediatric
Pharmacy Advocacy Group. He has been active in the American
Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition for many years
serving on the Board of Directors and on nearly all major
functional committees. Currently he serves on the A.S.P.E.N.
Abstract Review Committee. He is a member of the American
Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, American College of
Clinical Pharmacy, Tennessee Pharmacists Association, Tennessee
Society of Health-System Pharmacists, Memphis Area Society for
Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, American Institute of
Nutrition, American Society for Clinical Nutrition, and American
Federation for Medical Research.
Dr. Helms received the Pharmacist of the Year Award from the
TSHP in 1984. He has been recognized for research excellence
through A.S.P.E.N., MASPEN, and TSHP. |
